Davos is a small town nestled in the beautiful Alps. Once a year, this town becomes the activity center of the world and this year, it is from January 21st to the 25th when the World Economic Forum (WEF) comes to town. WEF Davos is the annual assembly of leaders from around the world, from across the fields – Politics, Social, Business, Theater, Arts, Sports, Media, etc. The streets are filled with people representing almost all nations of the worlds, and you can hear all languages being spoken at Davos, which literally becomes a global village.
Top CEOs and politicians roam the streets rushing between meetings or to make and renew friendships over a drink at a local bar. This is not an event with just men and women pushing their 50’s and 60’s having made it to the top but there are also the Young Global leaders – leaders who are under 40 and are already a catalyst for change. And then there are the young Global Shapers who have made an impact in their local communities through entrepreneurial changes, many from countries which are called under-developed – showing that the potential in these countries are endless. This town becomes a cauldron of hope and energy, which Dr. Klaus Schwab, founder (in 1971) and organizer of the WEF forum, expects will carry on for the whole year. This year’s agenda is titled “The Reshaping of the World – Consequences for Society, Politics and Business”. WEF in 1994 had seen the draft agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians. Curiously, the Syrian talks are also happening just a few hours away in Geneva at the same time, with many of the leaders also being at WEF. I have my fingers crossed for a landmark deal that the informal nature of WEF can foster.
Tech Mahindra, as one of the only 100 plus strategic partners of WEF, has been actively participating at these events for many years now. For us, these events have been about connectedness. Relationships built and strengthened here have been fostered year round. Our own CP, who has been recently announced as the CNBC India Business Man of the year (Kudos!), is sought after for media engagements and for leadings talks on transformational topics. The Day Before Davos dinner at Kaffe Klatsch, organized by TechM is a must attend on the calendars of many WEF regulars. Our Spouses Lunch, after the blockbuster and successful one of the last year with a talk by Paulo Coelho is eagerly awaited. This year, we will have a talk by Dr. Noreena Hertz, Economist and eminent author on Decision making.
It is still breaking dawn on 21st. We await the arrival of the Mahindra Delegation, comprising CP, Vineet, Rajeev Dubey and Pawan Goenka and his wife. As if in preparation to the start of the event, it was snowing lightly throughout the night and the town looks prettier, perhaps this is how the Gods want it. Hundreds of hours of work have been put into setting up meetings, planning and arranging for the events and covering logistics. They need to all come together now over the next 4 days. Here is wishing ourselves great success, coming together recognizing that we at Tech Mahindra, have a role to play to influence, shape and make a new and better future. This is something that we owe to ourselves and our future.
