Using a Smart Energy Platform to Manage Energy Consumption

As we progress in a much more technologically advanced era, the use of sophisticated devices and appliances seem to be skyrocketing - even more so with businesses that employ high end technology to gain competitive advantage. Energy management is therefore becoming a key concern for governments and businesses worldwide. With natural sources of energy quickly depleting and energy consumption constantly rising, a viable solution to manage the use of energy becomes crucial.

The fact is that most energy networks do not have the capability to meet the growing variation in demand for energy. Networks are not equipped to deal with multiple peaks in a day and inconsistent demand. Consequently, energy prices are on the rise and the cost of consuming energy is at an all time high. More importantly, this trend is causing several environmental concerns posing a number of risks to the planet’s ecological balance. In order to manage the far-reaching consequences of increased energy consumption, and to facilitate efficient use of energy, intelligent networks, otherwise known as smart grids, are being employed. Smart grids are designed to enable energy users match consumption effectively with the available supply of sustainable energy, and use it more efficiently. Smart energy platforms can integrate with intelligent grid networks to improve the efficiency, reliability, and safety of energy production and consumption.

For example, in a wind mill, parameters such as wind speed, direction can be measure real time. Using real time data, wind mill performance can be tuned by adjusting the pitch/angle of the blades. But the real benefit would be to optimize the entire wind farm by analyzing the impact of one tower on another because of factors like draft issues and grid requirements. System efficiency can be improved by integrating the demand, grid and the wind farms where the wind farms produce maximum energy when the demand is at the peak. This can be achieved using real time analytics, improved decision support through cloud based applications and algorithms to control the power generation.

A robust smart energy platform can deliver benefits in a number of ways:

  • Send warnings and notifications about energy consumption and help determine where energy usage can be optimized
  • Profile energy usage using analytics and illustrate energy usage patterns by different devices and appliances
  • Ensure reliability of the grid through better and more efficient energy management by leveraging technology and real time analytics
  • Devise new mechanisms to improve grid capacity through renewable sources by adding capacity back to the grid during peak loads
  • Manage supply of energy and forecast demand, while also providing greater control over usage and costs

A smart energy platform offering these capabilities can add significant value to businesses and homes. Built to integrate a variety of devices and appliances, a smart energy platform can transform businesses by helping them control and minimize energy consumption, bring down energy usage costs and contribute to a greener ecosystem.
