Tech Mahindra’s Role in IndiaAI Mission | Sovereign AI & Indian LLMs

Overview

Tech Mahindra has been selected by the Indian government as one of the 12 key players under the IndiaAI Mission to build India’s foundation models. Our 8-billion-parameter sovereign education LLM will be operational at the IndiaAI Impact Summit.

Role in the IndiaAI Mission

We are committed to play a pivotal role in supporting the IndiaAI Mission by developing a large-scale, India-first foundational language model designed to serve the country’s diverse linguistic and digital needs.

Our 8-billion-parameter foundational education LLM is tailored for Indian languages and dialects, enabling meaningful, inclusive AI adoption across the nation. This model is being designed for real-world use across classrooms, communities, and more.

This education centric LLM is driven by the need to democratize learning and address systemic challenges in access and language diversity. This aims to deliver a lower total cost of ownership, making AI adoption more feasible for schools and institutions.

Through this effort, Tech Mahindra supports key strategic objectives:

  • Strengthening sovereign AI capabilities for India
  • Accelerating the vision of Digital India
  • Enabling innovation for startups and SMEs by providing accessible AI foundations

By focusing on practical deployment and cost‑conscious AI architectures, our aims is to support the transition from experimentation to real‑world adoption, contributing to sovereign AI capabilities and broader ecosystem innovation.

Solution Highlight

Project Indus

An Indian LLM Built from Scratch getting transformed into an Education LLM for India

Project Indus is Tech Mahindra’s sovereign, Indic-first LLM built by its Research Hub Makers Lab to converse in Hindi and 37+ dialects. This model is now getting designed for real-world use across classrooms, communities, and more. To be up and running as an 8 billion parameter educational LLM at the IndiaAI Impact Summit.

Project Indus follows a “less is more” approach, emphasizing:

  • Rigorous data cleaning
  • Detection and removal of 10 different types of bias
  • Higher quality outputs through better datasets rather than sheer scale

Why an Educational LLM?

The focus on an education-centric LLM is driven by the need to democratize learning and address systemic challenges in access and language diversity.

Aimed to deliver a lower total cost of ownership, making AI adoption more feasible for schools and institutions.

Why an 8-Billion-Parameter Model?

Choosing an 8-billion-parameter architecture is a deliberate design decision focused on efficiency and real-world deployment.

With a balance of performance, cost, and deployability, the 8B model is well-suited to India’s educational and linguistic ecosystem.

Other Solutions

Panchang Intelligence

Leveraging the traditional Indian Panchang developed by Tech Mahindra’s Makers Lab to deliver long‑range rainfall predictions, achieving reliability far beyond modern short‑term weather models. Pi evaluates the Panchang’s accuracy globally and transforms its insights into a usable, technology‑driven format for industries that depend on advanced weather awareness.

AtmanirbharKrishi

A unified, farmer-centric digital platform developed by Tech Mahindra’s Makers Lab in collaboration with the Principal Scientific Advisor’s Office. It consolidates critical information from multiple Government of India departments, such as IMD and ISRO, and presents it through an easy-to-use mobile interface for farmers. Enabling seamless access to weather data, satellite insights, and agricultural advisories.
