A leading North American automaker reduced mainframe dependency and improved procurement visibility by migrating key steel procurement and coil-tracking capabilities to SAP on AWS. Faced with modernization constraints, the automaker needed to transition these business-critical operations from the legacy application without disrupting processes across its mainframe and SAP environments.

Working closely with the automaker, Tech Mahindra developed and implemented a modernization initiative that enabled a controlled transition and addressed cross-system dependencies. Our program also helped the automaker standardize procurement processes, reduce operational risks, and establish a scalable foundation for future enhancements.

Industry Challenge

The customer is a prominent North American automaker with a broad manufacturing network supported by service centers, suppliers, and internal business units. Operating on a mainframe-based application for business-critical operations, the company had to:

  • Manage its critical steel procurement and coil-tracking operations on a legacy system
  • Juggle between the mainframe and SAP environments
  • Coordinate operations with a fragmented view
  • Tackle operational risk and system dependencies

As part of its modernization endeavor, the company sought to migrate and modernize its operations to SAP on AWS.

Our Approach and Solution

To address operational hurdles and limited modernization, we implemented a strategic migration initiative. The approach included:

Technical Evaluation and SAP Process Alignment

Assessed the current steel procurement workflow and mapped it to SAP third-party order processing, defining the future-state process and related AWS platform requirements

Proof of Concept Validation

Established the feasibility of shifting critical procurement and invoice-creation activities from the legacy application into SAP

Cross-functional Delivery Partnership

Partnered with business and technology stakeholders to take the program from assessment to implementation with minimal disruption to live operations

Data Migration

Supported accurate movement of procurement data from the legacy environment into SAP

Data Validation

Verified the accuracy of migrated procurement data for gaps and errors before they could affect downstream reporting or plant operations

Business Readiness and Go-live Planning

Confirmed readiness through User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and timed go-live around critical business freeze periods, ensuring AWS environments were configured and provisioned on schedule

Business and Community Impact

Our engagement delivered the following outcomes:

  • Reduced Legacy Dependency: Decreased mainframe workload by approximately 100 million instructions per second (MIPS)
  • Enhanced Operational Visibility: Transitioned to a unified view of procurement and coil-tracking activity, lowering mean time to detect (MTTD) by 10%
  • Process Standardization: Replaced fragmented workarounds with an SAP-aligned procurement process
  • Lower Operational Risk: Simplified the operating model, reducing mean time to resolve (MTTR) by 12%
  • Foundation for Future Modernization: Created a scalable SAP on AWS foundation for future enhancements and change requests
