In Business, for Purpose

TechM makes a positive difference to society through its customers and the customers’ customers, too. Take the UP100 initiative, for example. With an all-women supported integrated team spread across the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, TechM is powering the world’s largest citizen emergency response centre for the Uttar Pradesh Police Department. Through phone calls, SMS, email, chat, and other communication channels, the team provides a 24X7X365 security cover to over 220 million people in the most populated state of the country.

Tech Mahindra also provides technical support to Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric citizen identity program, with over 1.2 billion enrolments in the last ten years.

Outside India, too, TechM has played an instrumental role in many socially-relevant initiatives in security (like the rail-road program), data, customer support and other fields, which have made the world around us to Rise.

Through focused initiatives in education and employability, Tech Mahindra Foundation enables over 1,000,000 children and young adults to rise for a better way of life.

Tech Mahindra Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of Tech Mahindra Limited. With a vision of ‘empowering through education’, the Foundation runs focused initiatives in education and employability in eleven cities of India, including Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi/NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, and Visakhapatnam.

In over ten years of its operations, the Foundation has changed the lives of more than a million children and young adults, empowering them through its schools and skills initiatives. Across initiatives, at least 50% of the total participants on the Foundation’s programs are girls/young women, and at least 10% are people with disabilities.

The Foundation has won numerous awards and accolades for its stellar work over the years and has positioned itself as one of the leading CSR establishments in the country.

Tech Mahindra’s 3-4-3 growth strategy that focuses on 3 megatrends, 4 big bets & 3 objectives goes beyond business. Making responsibility personal, TechMighties go the extra mile to embrace it in their daily lives and drive positive change uniquely.

In addition to its CSR portfolio fulfilled through the Foundation, Tech Mahindra also has a well-defined charter on individual social responsibility (ISR). In a Forbes blog, CEO CP Gurnani calls ISR “an emotional investment that can last a lifetime & beyond, and transform communities for a sustainable future.”

At Tech Mahindra, the 3-4-3 of business gets applied to responsibility in the following ways:

  • 3 trees: Every TechMighty is encouraged to plant at least three trees every month to increase the green cover on Earth. Where planting fresh trees is not possible, the associates are encouraged to adopt three plants and nurture them for a lifetime. Across locations, Tech Mahindra regularly organizes plantation drives to realize this mission. At the philosophical level, it aligns with the Mahindra Group’s belief that trees are the world’s hardest workers
  • 4 carpools: TechMighties believe in leaving this world in a better form than they found it in. Thanks to the internal carpooling app at Tech Mahindra, the associates offer or join shared rides for their daily commute between home and work. At an organizational level, Tech Mahindra celebrates one day every month as the 4P day, where TechMighties are encouraged to use any of the 4 Ps – paidal (walk), pedal (cycle), pool (carpool) or public transport – for their commute to and from work.
  • 3 hours: Each TechMighty is encouraged to volunteer for social causes for at least three hours every month. The associates can pick from volunteering for a program in education or employability at Tech Mahindra Foundation, a social initiative supported by the local Josh team, or even an external cause that they feel is close to their hearts. Volunteering for social responsibility initiatives gives our associates a chance to give back to society, and enjoy a welcome break from the routine life at the same time. Tech Mahindra records these efforts at an organizational level, and shares them with the Mahindra Group’s ESOPs team, rewarding the top contributors suitably for their efforts.

There are enough and more stories where Tech Mahindra associates have made ‘3-4-3 beyond business’ a personal mission in their lives, making a magical difference in the world around them.

Making responsibility personal and adopting sustainability as a way of life are the two key pillars that make Tech Mahindra a Company with a Purpose. Through corporate social responsibility efforts as an organization and individual social responsibility initiatives as individuals, we drive positive change for the people and #RiseForGood. In addition, we #RiseForGreen through a corporate sustainability portfolio that has won us tremendous recognition, establishing Tech Mahindra as one of the key leaders in the field of sustainability.

Our initiatives in sustainability stem from the Mahindra tenet of applying alternative thinking in whatever we do. It has propelled us to identify high impact material issues and concentrate individually on each one of them with the sole purpose of a sustainable business model. Tech Mahindra nurtures the same business philosophy of alternative thinking, strategically leveraging sustainability as our competitive advantage. Our ideology of sustainability is reflected in our rigor and strategic thinking across the organization. We believe that our operations should not adversely affect the future of our society, its ecological balance, and life support functions.

  • A No Plastic Company: Tech Mahindra has announced a universal ban on single-use plastic in any form across its campuses globally. This aligns with the Mahindra Group’s no plastic initiative led by Anand Mahindra himself. The initiative, launched in August 2019, received an overwhelming response, with associates pledging to it immediately. Tech Mahindra goes one step further to not just eliminate the use of new plastic, but also recycle existing plastic by tying up with organizations that convert it into biofuel. Associates can contribute single-use plastic for recycling, and even exchange their plastic bags for eco-friendly ones.
  • A No Smoking Campus: In an attempt towards both associate wellness as well as sustainability, Tech Mahindra has made all its campuses smoking/tobacco-free zones. Starting August 2019 again, this move, too, has received a warm response, with most associates appreciating Tech Mahindra’s efforts in this direction. Also, to discourage associates further from smoking in/around Tech Mahindra campuses, we collect a small contribution from associates if they are found smoking, and donate the amount to the foundation for its social responsibility initiatives. At locations where Tech Mahindra campuses have schools, hospitals, or academic institutions in the neighborhood, associates are discouraged to smoke even outside the campuses.

In addition to these, Tech Mahindra carries out several green/clean initiatives that contribute to the cause of #RiseToSustain. We are proud recipients of some of the most coveted awards and recognitions in sustainability, including – Ecovadis, Science-Based Targets, RobecoSAM, CDP, Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, FTSE4Good and so on.

  • On campus services: Tech Mahindra associates can benefit from professional services of counsellors, doctors, dieticians, physiotherapists, gym instructors and other medical/allied healthcare experts available on the campus. Tech Mahindra organizes targeted physical and digital events from time to time on various aspects of corporate wellness, which garner a warm response from the associates. These events include health checkup camps, webinars, one-on-one consultations and so on.
  • Online services: At Tech Mahindra, you can avail a preventive health screening, meet a doctor on chat, or even access an online pharmacy, all at the click of a button. Marrying the business of wellness with technology opens up a completely new world of wellness for our associates, where they can lead a healthy life, right from their workstation.
  • Fitness and non-medical services: Tech Mahindra campuses offer a variety of facilities that will help you not just become fit but stay fit the natural way. With several outdoor and indoor games to choose from, on-campus gymnasia, regular dance/aerobics, and other physical activity sessions, as well as participation in multiple internal and external championships and tournaments, we ensure that TechMighties stay happy as well as healthy on and beyond the campus. Other non-medical services include daycare facilities for children, financial wellness consultation and so on.
  • Emergency services: Tech Mahindra tries to be prepared for life’s unpredictability and the uncertainties it brings. All our campuses are equipped for providing first aid and preliminary health care to our employees, and have an ambulance on standby 24x7, for any emergencies that require swift and accurate action. The WoW portal also gives the associates access to find a blood donor and opportunities to register as one.
  • Emotional health and wellbeing at work: TechMighites enjoy access to YourDOST, an online emotional wellness platform, which leverages technology to enable a convenient, anonymous and confidential method of finding solutions to their emotional problems. They can securely connect 24x7 with 900+ experienced experts through web/mobile - without revealing one’s social identity, and avail support in the areas of life coaching, grief counseling, confidence building, personality development, career coaching, parenting, marital discord, caregiver support, de-addiction support, relationship counseling, conflict management, work-life balance and so on.
  • Associate Welfare Trust: Emergencies come announced, and any amount of preparation is not enough. We understand how difficult it can get when you shuttle between taking care of your loved ones and everything else. While your medical insurance cover provides for financial assistance in unfortunate events when you or someone in your family needs hospitalization, there are times when your expenses overshoot your coverage. This is exactly where the Associate Welfare Trust, a voluntary trust for and by the associates, comes to your rescue. For as little as ₹1 per month, you can avail emergency financial assistance if you ever run out of your medical insurance cover.

In addition to driving positive change as one works with the customers, through efforts in corporate/individual social responsibility and sustainability, as well as by bringing in powerful wellness initiatives for the associates, there are more ways of making a difference to the world around us. We understand it well. That’s why our efforts in driving positive change go far beyond the mandates: both that we’ve been given and that we’ve chosen for ourselves.

India saw some unprecedented natural calamities this year, which brought tremendous misfortune to thousands of families. That said, it also allowed us to serve our fellow citizens as a Company with a Purpose. We are proud to be among the institutions that lead the change whenever the need arises, over and beyond how we already contribute. In the bygone year, Tech Mahindra has contributed a whopping ₹2.25Cr towards causes that required the dedicated attention of every citizen of the country.

Whether it is about bringing some relief by rebuilding the flood-affected states of India, or by supporting the families of soldiers martyred in the Pulwama attack, Tech Mahindra came forward not just financially, but beyond. TechM volunteers traveled to the affected regions in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Odisha and Maharashtra to help.

It doesn’t end there. Tech Mahindra is supportive of individuals, groups, and teams within the company who bring ideas for good to the table. Through the Employee Social Responsibility Options or ESRO program, Tech Mahindra empowers its people to be champions of social change by leading initiatives for a cause that is close to their hearts. Where a cause is credible and the people committed, we go the extra mile to support our associates in pursuing the change, and ensuring that they achieve their vision.

Josh is a word in Hindi that means many words - zeal, spirit, zest, ebullience, or even fighting spirit. At TechM, Josh is a voluntary group of “life enthusiast TechMighties” who ensure fun, delight and connect at TechM. Through multiple events and initiatives organized across locations during the year, JOSH team members are known as “Joshilays” – give associates every reason to smile, celebrate and connect work with fun.

Joshilays are at the heart of the culture at Tech Mahindra and are spread across locations. Within Josh, there are clubs dedicated to culture, sports, adventure, movies, quizzing, and many others.

Initiatives taken by the Josh team include team activities, ‘bring your child to work day’, food competitions, and organizing a wide array of fun events to spread joy. They are also the pioneers in planning and organizing Family Day and Ekatvam, mega celebrations at Tech Mahindra. Easily the most popular team across the organization, over 2000 Joshileys are now connected with more than 200000 associates and family members, not only physically, but also through the JOSH mobile app. With 3-5 activities per month per location, year-long continuous efforts, and special efforts for Ekatvam, Josh volunteers play a big role in ensuring the happiness index at TechM is always high. Besides connecting fun and purpose, the volunteers themselves are seen to outperform peers, get better roles, and overall have a higher happiness score.

At TechM, our Rewards program is called KUDOS and is hosted on a robust platform that makes the rewarding process seamless, social, and experiential. The entire process of Reward & Recognition, starting from defining rewards to allocating budgets to nominating Associates for Awards to their approval, is executed on the Kudos portal. While most organizations have moved on to automated process for Reward & Recognition administration, the unique selling proposition of Kudos lies in that fact Kudos is inherently social and is designed keeping the Gen C (Generation Connected) in mind.

KUDOS portal is hosted on the cloud where Associates have the option of recognizing and congratulating their team members/peers/managers and sharing their appreciation/awards received with their networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. This social recognition platform replaces the conventional intranet as here associates can network, ideate, innovate, collaborate, communicate, and engage effectively. All the activities on Kudos appear on the social feed. It allows the recipient to “like” and “comment” on the awards received similar to any social networking sites. Hence, it unlocks the associates’ potential and increases the engagement levels and collaboration among the associates.

This one-stop platform brings recognition to the “Desk of every Associate”. All awards have varying reward points associated with them and Associates have three options to redeem their Kudos points- gift vouchers (e-gift/ physical vouchers), cash-outs and pro-social (donation).

Every year, 2nd October is celebrated as Founders’ day and Family day at Tech Mahindra. On this day, associates and their families get together at the office and have a day of celebrations that include games and a variety of entertainment besides an award ceremony especially for the families.

Amazing Family Awards are our way of publicly acknowledging the talent and achievements of not just TechMighties, but their families as well. Families connect and celebrate together on our Founders’ day every year. This remains a unique platform to share associates and their family’s achievements in academic and non-academic arenas. This is a simple way of saying ‘Thank You’ to our families.

With new-age digital tools like UVO and K2, we are changing the way employees interact with technology. K2 is a humanoid robot developed by our in-house team to provide our associates with an interactive experience when requesting HR transactional information. K2 is derived from - Knowledge and Kindness – our humanoid is equipped with cameras to recognize associates and can communicate with them, both vocally and by using a visual tablet device.

UVO that stands for Your Virtual Office buddy. UVO is a virtual chat-bot that has three main functionalities, namely to answer queries, resolve issues, and perform tasks in a simple, intuitive and engaging way.

The TiBOT or TIM Intelligence BOT where intelligence stands for “the ability to learn and comprehend”. TiBOT handles all queries related to our teams like raising service requests, finding asset details, resetting login password, frequently asked questions, booking a conference room, getting the status of a service request, and setting up a WebEx or audio bridge. The TiBOT is accessible to Associates through five channels – in a mobile app, through a workstation client i.e. Skype for business, through an Enterprise Web Portal as a Web Chat, on Microsoft TEAMS, and through an SFB mobile client.

Our leaders practice active listening and encourage a culture of openness where TechMighties are empowered to share ideas and suggest changes so that they can actively address any concerns that arise proactively. We believe that when we listen to our Associates, we are in a much better position to lead this increasingly diverse and multigenerational workforce into a bright future.

Our Associates are not tools and resources, but people who are valuable assets who bring unique capabilities and competencies and want to be understood and listened to. Therefore, our leaders have an “open door” policy when it comes to listening to the ideas, suggestions, and concerns that come from our TechMighties. As a demonstration of this, we have an “Open Cabin day” at various locations to encourage our Associates to walk in and talk to not just with their manager but also with other important leaders in the organization.

All Hands Meets with CXOs are organized quarterly covering all India locations and abroad, where the CXOs communicate strategic priorities, initiatives, and share business updates with Associates. Apart from the quarterly All Hands Meet, individual business units have Business Townhall events open to associates belonging to that particular vertical. At this meeting, Senior Leaders share updates about the unit’s performance and recognize the efforts put in by employees.

The monthly floor walks conducted by the HR team give associates a chance to interact with the heads of business units and support functions. These connect sessions close to the workspaces of our associates serve to educate them about the many happenings that affect their work-life at Tech Mahindra including updates from the people practices, programs and policies, updates about the unit, etc.

We believe the global external environment warrants developing the competencies of the associates in new-age technologies, platforms, and solutions with a consultative mindset. The IRIS program has helped facilitate a culture of Innovation and generated new revenue streams.

IRIS (Ideate, Refine, Implement, Shine) is a structured innovation platform focused on garnering ideas from Associates on a specific set of business themes provided by the customer delivery managers/client partners who interact with customers daily. Associates are encouraged to contribute their ideas against business themes. Internal innovation mentors then review the ideas and help refine them in collaboration with the associate(s).

Once the ideas are accepted, it is developed into a business plan by the ideator in collaboration with the theme owner by conducting a market analysis and making the required changes. The final stage requires further teamwork to develop a Proof of Concept before releasing it to the market. On acceptance of the idea by the Innovation mentors, Associates are rewarded with points, which can be encashed. This demonstrates how the whole process of innovation is a two-way interaction that involves a lot of feedback and revision of ideas.

Since it’s inception, the IRIS platform has been successful in involving Associates in the ideating and innovation process of the organization and has been motivating Associates through the visibility given to their innovative work and the potential for channeling their efforts for greater results.

IRIS (Ideate, Refine, Implement, Shine) is a structured innovation platform focused on garnering ideas from Associates on a specific set of business themes provided by the customer delivery managers/client partners who interact with customers daily. Associates are encouraged to contribute their ideas against business themes. Internal innovation mentors then review the ideas and help refine them in collaboration with the associate(s).

Shadow Board is a parallel board constituted by internal employees who observe and analyze trends in the industry and the organization and come up with ideas to gain from them.

The Achievers In the Making program seeks to identify young Associates (with 6 months to 6 years’ experience), with an entrepreneurial spirit and an untapped potential to sell, and have them transition into client-facing roles. Through this program, we give associates opportunities to shadow and work closely with key Sales Leads in client-facing roles across the globe.

Tech Mahindra’s Global Leadership Cadre (GLC) Program selects experienced graduates from top B-Schools, allows them to work directly with the leadership teams in high impact roles and grooms them to become the change champions of the company.

The Management Trainee program at Tech Mahindra is aimed at nurturing young leaders and are hired from MBA institutes for growth accelerating and high visibility roles.

eXtra Mile is an internal freelancing platform where we crowdsource opportunities from Managers and invites employees to work on live projects. This allows employees to test out skills they have acquired through self-learning and gives Managers an extra helping hand to meet those project deadlines which in effect creates an informal gig-economy within.

It is our philosophy to provide opportunities for all our Associates and towards this, we make available all open positions through the Internal Job Postings (IJP) process. All Associates who are on bench /buffer can apply for these openings. Associates who are already allocated projects can apply for suitable openings with their Manager’s approval. For Associates on projects, the organization offers a quick and seamless transition process into the new roles within 30 days. This process ensures timely fulfillment as well as ensures that the Associates’ career aspirations are managed more effectively.

TechMighTea is a first-of-its-kind program that randomly matches (using Computer Algorithm) TechmMightes for 15-minute Tea meetings to foster collaboration, establish connections and encourages more innovative thinking.
