Every admission cycle, prospective university students ask whether this degree will help them build a successful career. That question remains important, yet the changing nature of work is prompting students to think beyond their first job. A more common concern may now be: “Will my studies remain relevant by the time I graduate?”
The world outside the college/university campus is changing faster than most institutions can keep pace with. Artificial intelligence is rapidly influencing industries and business models. New professions and roles are emerging overnight. This creates a new challenge for higher education: students must build careers that can adapt as industries, roles, and skill demands keep shifting.
Degrees still matter. However, what employers expect from graduates today extends beyond the degree itself.
Academic Knowledge is Not the Only Differentiating Factor
For years, academic knowledge was believed to be the strongest indicator of career readiness. However, that is no longer the case. Information can be accessed easily by anyone, and AI systems can retrieve, summarize, and analyze it in seconds. But it cannot replace human judgment, ethics, and empathy. What matters is how well students can interpret information, question it, and apply it to difficult problems.
A broader shift is already underway in the global workforce. As indicated by the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, 39% of workers' core skills will undergo transformation by 2030.1 While 92 million jobs could become redundant, 170 million new roles are expected to emerge, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs worldwide.1
The data points to a promising outlook, but the challenge lies in helping graduates recognize opportunities and make the most of them. Universities must therefore develop attributes such as critical thinking, adaptability, communication, and continuous learning alongside academic success.
Learning Must Move Out of the Classroom
Experiential learning is one of the biggest shifts in higher education today.
Learning happens differently when students engage in live industry projects, internships, research, or solving actual business problems. In these situations, students are exposed to uncertainty, teamwork, and decision-making skills that can only be developed outside the lecture hall.
These industry connections benefit institutions too, keeping them attuned to evolving employer expectations. Direct engagement with industry enables universities to update their curricula, incorporate new technologies, and ensure that students acquire the skills they need.
India's policy direction aligns well with this idea. The Union Budget 2026-27 announced the setting up of five National Centers of Excellence for Skilling through global partnerships.2 The initiative recognizes the importance of industry-focused education and training in creating India’s future workforce. This also connects to the overall vision of the National Education Policy 2020 and Viksit Bharat 2047, both of which emphasize an integrated approach to education, skills, and employability.
AI Should Strengthen Human Potential
Although most discussions about AI in education focus on tools, technology, and platforms, its real value lies in how students use it to learn, solve problems, and think more effectively.
As workplaces increasingly integrate AI, graduates must develop the skills to use these tools effectively and critically assess their outputs. These questions should be raised about AI output and how to integrate this technology into decision-making.
AI governance has become a global concern. UNESCO has recently observed that two-thirds of higher education institutions worldwide have already adopted formal recommendations on AI or are developing them.3 This suggests that responsible integration matters more than whether to use AI at all.
Preparing Students for the Future
Modern universities face their greatest challenge: many future jobs haven’t emerged yet. So, preparing students for the future requires regular curriculum updates alongside a focus on curiosity, adaptability, flexibility, and a readiness to keep learning.
This sense of urgency is evident across industries. According to Gartner, by 2030, one out of every ten companies will become AI-first organizations.4 Rather than viewing this as a threat, universities should see it as an opportunity to rethink how they prepare students.
After all, education has always been about shaping individuals who can adapt to change, collaborate, solve problems, and contribute to society.
As roles continue to shift, a university's true value will be reflected in graduates’ ability to adapt, learn, and succeed with confidence. Being industry-ready means building the skills and mindset needed for lifelong learning, growth, and reinvention across a changing career.
